Ensuring Commercial Roofing Safety: Essential Precautions and Checklist

Safety should always be a top priority for commercial roofing projects. Whether it’s repairs, maintenance, or installations, working on a roof can pose significant risks to workers and property if proper safety precautions are not followed. Progressive Roofing is a proud member of the National Safety Council and prioritizes the safety of its crew, customers, and building occupants above all else.  Our goal is not only to follow current OSHA standards but exceed them wherever possible.

Below, we discuss essential safety precautions we take and provide the comprehensive checklist we use to help ensure the safety of workers and property during our commercial roofing projects.

1. Conducting a Safety Assessment

Before starting any roofing project, we conduct a thorough safety assessment of the work area and identify potential hazards such as uneven surfaces, slippery conditions, electrical hazards, and nearby obstacles.

2. Providing Proper Training

We ensure that all workers involved in the roofing project receive adequate training on safety protocols, equipment usage, and emergency procedures. Training covers fall protection, ladder safety, and proper handling of materials and tools.  All our workers undergo a three year apprentice training program that not only develops their quality roofing standards but helps them prepare for the risks associated with their jobs.

3. Using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

We require workers to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and non-slip and steel toed footwear to protect against potential hazards and injuries.  (Appropriate, adequate, and conservative clothing in all weather is a requirement as well.)

4. Implementing Fall Protection Measures

We install guardrails, safety nets, scaffolding and/or personal fall arrest systems to prevent falls from heights. We ensure that workers are properly trained in using fall protection equipment and that it is regularly inspected and maintained.

5. Securing Ladders and Access Points

We secure ladders and access points to the roof to prevent slips, trips, and falls. We employ ladder stabilizers or tie-offs to ensure stability and maintain three points of contact when climbing or descending ladders.

6. Handling Materials Safely

We train workers on proper lifting techniques and safe handling of roofing materials to prevent strains, sprains, and other musculoskeletal injuries. When handling heavy or bulk materials, we use mechanical lifting aids or equipment.

7. Maintaining a Clean and Organized Work Area

We strive to keep our work area clean and organized to minimize trip hazards and prevent accidents. We remove debris, tools, and equipment from walkways and work areas and use caution tape or barriers to mark off hazardous areas.

8. Monitoring Weather Conditions

To prevent accidents and injuries, we monitor weather conditions closely and suspend work during inclement weather, such as high winds, lightning storms, or heavy rain.

9. Providing Emergency Preparedness

We have an emergency response plan in place and ensure that all workers are familiar with emergency procedures such as evacuation routes and first aid protocols and contacting emergency services if needed.

10. Conducting Regular Safety Inspections

We conduct regular safety inspections of every work site to identify and address potential hazards or safety violations. We encourage our workers to report any safety concerns or near misses immediately.

Investing in safety measures is common sense. It protects workers from harm, enhances productivity, reduces downtime, and preserves the integrity of your roofing project. We work tirelessly to protect our workers and your property by following the aforementioned safety precautions.
